Inpatient or Observation Patient

When you are in the hospital your physician determines your status as either an inpatient or an observation patient. There are important differences between these two statuses that have implications for how long you may be in the hospital and how insurance covers your hospital stay.

Inpatient Status

A person is assigned inpatient status when he/she is in a hospital bed and has a condition that cannot be evaluated and treated in less than 24 hours.

For patients with Medicare, Medicare Part A covers an inpatient hospital stay. For patients with private insurance, an inpatient hospital stay is typically covered in accordance with a hospital inpatient policy benefit. Inpatient and outpatient benefits often have different deductibles and co-pays.

Observation Status

A person is assigned observation status when he/she can be evaluated within 24 hours, is anticipated to rapidly improve within 24 hours, or develops a condition after an outpatient surgery and requires observation.

For patients with Medicare, Medicare Part B covers an observation hospital stay. For patients with private insurance, an observation hospital stay is typically covered in accordance with an outpatient policy benefit. Inpatient and out patient benefits often have different deductibles and co-pays.
