Support groups can serve as a safe place to share the breast cancer experience and connect with other people who are navigating the challenges of cancer. These groups and programs offer emotional, social and educational support to those dealing with the cancer journey as patients, family members, caregivers and survivors. Breast Cancer Survivor Group
A monthly group offered to women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Each month features a specific “tool” that is designed to help with the physical and emotional changes associated with this diagnosis. The group is facilitated by a breast cancer survivor, breast health navigator and hospital chaplain who have unique experiences to cover pertinent, educational topics, ending with a reflection to calm the spirit.
Young Ribbons-Breast Cancer Survivor Group
A support group for those diagnosed with breast cancer younger than the age of 45. This support group helps participants connect with other breast cancer survivors to share, learn and support one another during and after treatment. The group meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at Centegra Gavers Breast Center, 360 N. Terra Cotta Road, Crystal Lake.
A six-week group program for cancer survivors who have completed active treatment generally within the past two years. Topics of fitness, nutrition, emotional and medical management are highlighted at Centegra Sage Cancer Center, 4305 Medical Center Drive, McHenry. Participants engage in exercise with personal trainers and are challenged to complete food diaries, exercise logs and action plans toward increasing empowerment and optimizing physical, emotional and spiritual wellness. The benefit and use of a cancer survivorship plan is explained and encouraged.
Growing Together Through Cancer Transitions
A monthly group for cancer survivors who have completed the Cancer Transitions program. Education and support is offered through group experience to increase personal empowerment and wellness in body, mind and spirit toward the goal of long term cancer survivorship. Participants in the group become part of the Centegra cancer survivors’ network, offering input and direction for activities and events as well as the nurturing and mentoring of others living with cancer.
Caring for the Caregiver
A monthly group for those offering care to anyone with a serious illness. This group provides an opportunity to connect with others who understand the unique experience of being a caregiver. To assist those in a caregiving role, education and support are offered on relevant topics for successful management of the challenges of caregiving. Relaxation and guided imagery are used to promote personal peace and restore a sense of wellness and balance. Caring for the Caregiver is on the third Thursday of each month from 10-11 a.m. at Centegra Sage Cancer Center, 4305 Medical Center Drive, McHenry.
Living with Grief
A six-week program for adults living with the death of a loved one, Living with Grief offers grief education and support. The group offers storytelling, sharing, journaling and expressive arts. Participants learn how to live with the pain, adjustment and challenge of grief as life beyond loss is understood and re-engaged. The group is facilitated by a licensed clinical professional counselor with advanced training and experience in grief work.
