Centegra Health System’s Worksite Wellness Department will help employees at 20 companies get healthy through a bit of friendly competition in 2011. The “Break Your Boundaries” program will support people as individuals or teams as they compete to improve their health and win cash prizes.”Adults spend so much of their time at work and we know that workplace wellness programs are extremely successful,” said Celine Pope, wellness manager with Centegra Health System. “We already have 12 companies that have committed to this exciting program, which will improve the overall health of their employees.”
The “Break Your Boundaries” program educates and motivates employees about nutrition, exercise and overall wellness. Trained Centegra wellness specialists will visit companies to teach their employees how to create lifestyles and workplaces that emphasizes health and wellness.”Each year we offer health risk assessments to McHenry County Corporations as part of our Worksite Wellness program,” Pope said. “In 2010, 80 percent of the employees at participating companies were overweight.
We want to help corporations create healthier, more productive workforces that encourage wellness for everyone.” To compete in the “Break Your Boundaries” weight loss contest, individuals or teams of four employees will receive detailed rules and regulations manuals at their pre-contest measurements. They will have eight weeks to create healthier lifestyles and shed excess weight before their final weigh-in. Then, participants can win from an accumulated score of percentage of weight lost, inches lost, exercise points, food log points and education points.
Winners will receive cash prizes of up to $1,000: 60 percent will be awarded at the end of the contest and 40 percent will be awarded six months later if the percentage of weight lost has remained within three percent of the person’s post-contest measurements.”The “Break Your Boundaries’ contest is a great way to kick-start a healthier lifestyle,” said Dr. Barbara Amsler, an internal medicine physician with Centegra Primary Care. “Studies show a simple loss of five pounds can lower blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose. Employees who take part in this program will learn how to lose weight and keep it off so they will have more energy at work and at home. I wish all my patients would have this great opportunity to improve their health while they’re at work.”
