Youth Concussion & Cardiac Screening Program

The Centegra Health System Foundation is raising $150,000 to provide youth concussion and cardiac screenings in schools throughout McHenry County. These screening programs may prevent life-altering, debilitating sports injuries and provide peace of mind to parents so their children can play with fewer risks.

The Importance of Concussion Screenings

Concussions account for 25 percent of all sports injuries in games and 13 percent of all injuries in practice at the high school level.

sageThe goal of concussion screening is to prevent Second-Impact Syndrome, which is a repeated concussion that occurs before the brain has healed from the initial traumatic brain injury. Second impact syndrome can result in brain swelling, permanent brain damage or even death.

Centegra’s concussion baseline screening is a two-part cognitive and balance test that determines a student’s cognitive function and balance before a concussion occurs. If the student sustains a concussion, the physician can determine if the student’s brain has fully healed by comparing the post-concussion test to the original concussion screening.

The Importance Screening for Sudden Cardiac Death

Sudden cardiac death is the result of an unexpected failure of proper heart function without trauma, usually during or immediately after exercise. When sudden cardiac death occurs, the athlete quickly collapses, loses consciousness and ultimately dies unless normal heart rhythm is restored using an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Centegra’s program is unique among other youth cardiac screening programs because clinical professionals perform the EKGs and echocardiograms. Testing is clinically managed by Centegra, with the schools and parent volunteers performing administrative duties.

Centegra Home Health Telehealth Monitoring Program

The Centegra Health System Foundation is raising $150,000 for the Centegra Home Health Telehealth Program. This program provides telehealth monitoring devices and nursing oversight by an advanced practice nurse or nurse practitioner to qualified Centegra Home Health patients in our community. The telehealth kits cost about $2,000 each for the device and monthly fee.

The Home Health Telehealth Program will help Centegra home health nurses care for patients whose chronic conditions cause frequent hospital readmissions. Nurses will be able to intervene in a timely way before patients need to go to the hospital. Preventing readmissions has a several benefits:

  • Improved quality of life and independence for the patient
  • Peace of mind for the patient’s family members

How the Home Health Telehealth Monitoring Devices Work

The devices are easy to use and the patients are instructed to use them each morning when they wake. The telehealth devices are personalized to collect appropriate patient data, including blood pressure, blood glucose levels, oxygen levels, weight, and heart rate.

A nurse will remotely monitor the patient’s data using a web-based application. Each patient’s device is personalized to send alerts when changes that could indicate a decline in his or her health status occur. If a patient’s health information shows notable changes, the nurse will have immediate access to the patient’s health history to compare data. The nurse can then call the patient, visit the patient if necessary, or modify his or her medication or treatment.
