What is Endocrinology?

Endocrinology is the field of medicine that specializes in the care of the endocrine system. The endocrine system is a complex collection of hormone-producing glands that control basic body functions such as metabolism, growth, and sexual development. The endocrine system consists of:

  • Pituitary gland
  • Hypothalamus
  • Pancreas
  • Adrenal cortex
  • Thyroid gland
  • Parathyroid glands
  • Gonads

The amount of hormones produced by each gland is carefully balanced, and the hormones produced by the endocrine glands interact with each other to maintain this balance. Too much or too little of a certain hormone can have effects throughout the body and cause various endocrine disorders.

What Do Endocrinologists Treat?

Centegra Physician Care (CPC) endocrinologists treat many different symptoms and diseases related to the endocrine system at CPC clinics in Crystal Lake, Huntley, and McHenry, including:

Evaluation and management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in adults and children older than 10, including access to a fully accredited Diabetes Education Center comprised of dietitians, diabetes educators, nurse practitioners, and psychologists.

Our offices offer education and management of:

  • Insulin pumps – deliver insulin automatically, allowing for additional corrective amounts to be given. Pumps are worn continually
  • V-Go devices – a simple form of pump that delivers low doses of insulin only without automatic corrections/adjustments

Diagnostic/sensor equipment, such as the I-Pro can help monitor and record blood sugar numbers every 5 minutes.  They are provided in the office, worn for 3 days and then returned so the data can be assessed and further treatment can be determined.

Our Certified Diabetes Educator helps educate and counsel patients on insulin usage and management, as well as start diagnostic equipment and pumps.
