Centegra Health System, Amir Heydari, MD, and Centegra Weight-Loss Surgery Center has been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. The ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery. Heydari, of Surgical Associates of Fox Valley, is on staff at Centegra Health System.
According to a report released in 2007 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the number of bariatric surgeries has grown from 16,000 procedures performed in 1992 to 170,000 performed in 2005. Faced with clinical evidence that the most experienced and best-run bariatric surgery programs have by far the lowest rates of complications, the ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence program was created to recognize bariatric surgery centers that perform well and to help surgeons and hospitals continue to improve the quality and safety of care provided.
To earn a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation, the Centegra Weight-Loss Surgery Center underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes was collected. The Centegra Weight-Loss Surgery Center and other centers receiving the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation agree to continue to share information on clinical pathways, protocols and outcomes data.
“Due to the increasing prevalence of morbid obesity, the inherent risks and the opportunities available greatly improve the health of this patient population, we recognize the need to implement a systematic approach to improving quality,” said Heydari. “At the Centegra Weight-Loss Surgery Center we believe that the ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence program will serve as a catalyst, driving our strong program to get even better.”
Obesity has become a significant national health issue, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting that 66 percent of all US adults are overweight or obese. Morbid obesity is closely correlated with a number of serious conditions that severely undermine the health of overweight patients, including heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Bariatric surgery, when performed correctly, can help obese patients manage these conditions. By definition, surgeons with ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation practice only top quality care, ensuring efficacy of the procedure with each patient to the best of their abilities.
The Centegra Weight-Loss Surgery Center recently moved from Centegra Hospital-Woodstock to Centegra Health Campus-Huntley in an effort to provide a much-needed weight-loss surgery program expansion. Due to about a 200% growth over the past four years, the current center outgrew its capacity. The relocation will provide larger and more private accommodations on the Centegra Health Campus-Huntley. The new address is 10350 Haligus Road, Huntley and the new phone number is 847-802-7230. Hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Success stories and expert advice from Centegra’s clinical team are presented during free monthly informational sessions open to the public. Also provided is a wealth of information about the benefits, multi-disciplinary team approach, surgery options and support available at Centegra. Videos showcasing patients, as well as the opportunity to speak with former patients who are excited to share their success stories are available at the end of each session.
Classes will continue to take place in the evenings and doctor appointments will still be available some evenings. Consultations, screenings, life-long support and a two-month membership to Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Centers will continue to be features of the popular and successful program.
The next free informational session is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26 at Centegra Hospital – Woodstock, Route 14 and Doty Road, in conference rooms A & B. Registration for the session can be made by calling 877-CENTEGRA. The actual surgeries will continue to be performed at Centegra Hospital-Woodstock.
Centegra Health Campus-Huntley is located near the corner of Haligus and Algonquin Roads. It features two significant structures on the continuum of health care: a health center building featuring Centegra Immediate Care, the Centegra Medical Imaging Center, physician offices and laboratory outpatient phlebotomy services; and Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center, focusing on wellness, fitness, preventive health and health education. The Centegra Health Center is also home to independent specialty physicians and Centegra Primary Care doctors that include endocrinology, family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and rheumatology.
“The Bariatric Center of Excellence designation as well as the expansion of the Centegra Weight-Loss Surgery Center will provide additional support to our already impressive weight loss program. Centegra Health System remains committed to be the destination location for bariatric procedures in our region. This recognition by the ASMBS confirms our focus and commitment of these valuable patient services,” said Jason Sciarro, Centegra Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
Many insurance companies and Medicare provide weight-loss surgery coverage only for programs that have achieved the Bariatric Center of Excellence designation.
