State board approves plans for Centegra Hospital-Huntley

Population growth spurred need for hospital

BOLINGBROOK – The Illinois Health Facilities Services and Review Board approved Centegra Health System’s plan for a 128-bed hospital in Huntley during a meeting July 24. This is only the second new hospital to be approved in the state of Illinois in the past 30 years. It is anticipated that Centegra Hospital-Huntley will treat its first patients in 2016, create 800 construction jobs and employ 1,100 area residents.

“We are thrilled by the board’s decision,” said Centegra Health System Chief Executive Officer Michael S. Eesley. “Residents of southern McHenry County and northern Kane County need better access to hospital care, and the state recognized that. This is a great day for communities in this region that are currently underserved when it comes to health care.”

State figures showed that McHenry County has the second greatest need for a hospital of any area in the state. The new hospital is scheduled to open its doors in 2015.

“Centegra Health System has been an outstanding partner for many years and Huntley is excited to welcome a full-service Centegra hospital to our village,” said Huntley Mayor Chuck Sass. “Top-of-the-line health care close to home is exactly what our growing population needs.”

Centegra will now proceed with its final engineering and design components. When completed, the hospital will feature 100 medical surgical beds, an eight-bed Intensive Care Unit, a full-service emergency department with a Level II trauma center, Level II special care nursery, non-invasive cardiology services, a helipad for transporting patients with the most critical needs and a dedicated women’s center.

The facility will be located on Centegra’s existing health and wellness campus at Reed and Haligus Roads. The campus currently includes an outpatient health center featuring Centegra Immediate Care and an advanced imaging center, physician offices and Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center. In addition, the new Centegra Back and Spine Center just opened on that campus in May.

“We are thrilled by the board’s decision to approve Centegra Hospital-Huntley,” said Centegra Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning, Susan Milford. “The hospital will build upon existing services offered on our Huntley campus by providing full, around-the-clock inpatient and emergency care. Area residents will now have full access to top-notch health care and wellness services right in their own backyard.”

The project has seen widespread support from local residents. More than 16,000 community members submitted letters to the state expressing their support for the project.

“What happened today is a tribute to the thousands of local residents who voiced their support,” Eesley said. “The enthusiasm we have seen for Centegra Hospital-Huntley is remarkable. The community wants and needs this hospital, and we couldn’t be happier to deliver it. Centegra has been an integral part of the region for nearly a century, and we have no doubt that our future here will be even brighter than the past.”

The state of Illinois requires that major health care building projects be approved through a Certificate of Need process. Centegra Health System submitted its application for a new hospital in December of 2010. That process, which included a public hearing on the project, culminated with the positive vote from the Illinois Health Facilities Services and Review Board on July 24, 2012.

Centegra has already received approval from the Village of Huntley to build a hospital on the Huntley campus. Final engineering and design components will now begin. Visit CentegraHospitalHuntley.com for updates on its progress and opportunities to get involved.
