Centegra Health System salutes those who are recovering from alcohol or substance abuse during National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in September. The month also pays tribute to the caregivers who help people learn that recovery from substance abuse in all forms is possible.
”I was a heroin addict. I had tried stopping on my own, but once I would start to go through the withdrawals, I would start again,” said Heather, a drug addict for more than four years.Heather, who requested her last name not be used, has been clean since April 2010. Heather attributes her success to the help she received at Centegra Behavioral Health.”The best thing I could have done was to call Centegra,” Heather said. “They made me deal with a lot of stuff that I wasn’t dealing with.” The intensive outpatient program encourages patients to talk about their struggles in a group setting as well as with a counselor one-on-one. Heather underwent grief counseling after she lost her fiance to a drug overdose prior to beginning her daily drug habit.
Heather said, “One of my hardest issues was cutting ties with people I used to use with. Now I look back and it was the best thing to do.” She said she also learned to establish a strong support system and to talk through her problems by being open and honest. To help remove the obstacles that may prevent a person from seeking alcohol and substance abuse treatment, Centegra offers free substance abuse screenings. For more information or to make an appointment, call (800) 765-9999.
