WOODSTOCK – Two Centegra Primary Care physicians are now providing laparoscopic hysterectomies to women of the greater McHenry County area. Dr. Dudley Brown and Dr. Alissa Erogbogbo perform the surgeries at Centegra Hospital-Woodstock.
The laparoscopic surgery offers many benefits to women who need hysterectomies. During the procedure, a physician creates three small incisions in the woman’s abdomen and uses a small camera to locate the uterus so it can be detached from its blood supply and removed. A woman’s fallopian tubes, ovaries and cervix can also be removed through laparoscopic surgery.
The laparoscopic surgery is also an alternative for women who cannot receive vaginal hysterectomies because they have scar tissue or because the uterus is too large.
“Women who choose this surgery want to get back to their regular lives as quickly as possible,” Brown said. “Traditional hysterectomy surgeries involve large incisions in the abdomen and longer and more painful recoveries.”
Erogbogbo said recovery from traditional hysterectomy surgeries can take four to six weeks.
“Laparoscopic hysterectomy typically requires a one-day hospital stay and a two-to-four week recovery,” Erogbogbo said. “With either surgery, women should not lift or exercise for about six weeks but the faster recovery time of the laparoscopic procedure is a clear benefit.”
