The pastoral care department of Centegra Health System celebrates the week of Nov. 11 to Nov. 18 as “Wrapping Centegra in Prayer: Celebration of our Prayer Shawl Knitters.”
The week will feature information about the Centegra Prayer Shawl Ministry and small prayer cloths will be available for hospital visitors in the lobbies of Centegra Hospital-Woodstock, Centegra Hospital-McHenry and Centegra Specialty Hospital-Woodstock.
In 2009, the pastoral care department began a relationship with the prayer shawl ministries of seven local Christian congregations wishing to donate prayer shawls to be given to Centegra patients and family members. Since that time, three more prayer shawl groups have come forward to donate prayer shawls.
Today, 180 volunteers from 10 groups knit the prayer shawls Centegra chaplains give to patients and family members who are in need as a gentle reminder of the prayers of love and compassion prayed for them by total strangers. Recipients of a prayer shawl may literally wrap themselves in compassion and prayer in time of great need.
In addition, Centegra associates will be given a chance to both support and thank the prayer shawl knitters by donating skeins of yarn. Yarn donation and collection week will be Nov. 4 to Nov. 11. Collection boxes will be available throughout the system for associates to drop off skeins of yarn that will be divided and gifted as thanks to prayer shawl knitters.
A tea honoring the prayer shawl knitters will be conducted from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at Centegra Hospital-McHenry in the classrooms. The tea will feature live music and a presentation, “The Practices of Gratitude: Developing a Grateful Heart.”
