Centegra Memorial Medical Center Cited in U.S. News’ “America’s Best Hospitals” Rankings
U.S. News magazine announced this week its annual rankings of “America’s Best Hospitals” . Centegra Memorial Medical Center was cited this year as one of the nation’s leading hospitals in the category for respiratory care. U.S. News has issued its annual rankings of America’s medical centers for 16 years. Hospitals are ranked in 17 specialties, from cancer and heart disease to pediatrics and urology. Unlike other hospital rankings, “America’s Best Hospitals” looks at entire specialties rather than at specific procedures.
Part of Centegra Health System, Centegra Memorial Medical Center is located in Woodstock, IL and serves the health care needs of the greater McHenry County region. The hospital was established in 1914 and has been serving the community continuously for over 90 years. Centegra Memorial provides a full range of acute care and outpatient services including cardiology, obstetrics with Level II nursery care, rehabilitation and therapy, medical/surgical services, pediatrics, and a Level II Trauma Center including the Flight for Life helicopter.
Just 176 hospitals scored high enough this year to rank in even a single specialty out of all 6,007 U.S. medical centers. In 12 of the 17 specialties, ranked hospitals met standards that are mostly driven by hard data. To be considered for the 12 data-driven specialties, a hospital needed to meet at least one of three requirements: be a member of the Council of Teaching Hospitals, be affiliated with a medical school, or make available to patients at least nine out of 18 technology-related services deemed worthwhile. This year fewer than one third of all hospitals made it through the first gate.
Qualifying hospitals received a numerical assessment (the U.S. News Score) made up of three equal parts: reputation, death rate, and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services. The rankings list the 50 hospitals with the highest scores.
In acknowledging the U.S. News recognition Centegra President and CEO Michael S. Eesley noted, “We are constantly striving to bring the highest levels of care to our community. Receiving this recognition from such a valued source is a validation of the effort we are making at Centegra Health System. Our community can be confident that the care they receive at our hospitals is among the best available anywhere.”
