Holiday survival tips offered for those living with diabetes

FIO_040

With the holidays just around the corner, we can all expect two things: spending time with friends and family and celebrating with food.

Often, we have an increased exposure to calorie and carbohydrate-rich dishes. This can create a challenge for people who have diabetes or those watching their diets. The following are tips to help you feel prepared for all the holiday eating challenges:

  • For Thanksgiving and Christmas, take something healthy to share with everyone.
  • Try to focus more on friends and family, instead of food.
  • Try to eat the same amount of carbohydrates you would in a normal meal.
  • If you want dessert, trim carbohydrate-containing food during the main course and save that for something sweet later.
  • Don’t skip meals or snacks earlier in the day to save calories or carbohydrates for later in the day. This will only make it harder for you to control your blood glucose and you will be more likely to overeat.
  • Lastly, eat slowly and enjoy the special occasion foods.
