Colon symptoms

Colon cancer does not usually cause symptoms in its earliest, most treatable stages. Centegra Health System recommends a person receives a colonoscopy at least once every 10 years starting at age 50. To find an internal medicine doctor or family practitioner who will discuss your health history and recommend screenings that are right for you, call 815-338-6600.

Colon cancer can often be symptom free, which is why screenings are so important. Centegra Health System recommends you see a doctor if you have the following symptoms:

  • A change in bowel habits
  • Blood, either bright red or black and tarry, in the stool
  • Stools that are narrower than usual
  • Diarrhea, constipation or feeling that the bowel does not empty completely
  • General abdominal discomfort, such as frequent gas pains, bloating, fullness and/or cramps
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Constant feeling of fatigue or tiredness
