March marks Brain Injury Awareness Month and Centegra Health System is committed to raising awareness about traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
A traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability in children and adults from ages 1 to 44. Brain injuries are most often caused by automobile crashes or sports injuries but a simple fall on the playground or at work can result in a TBI. Nearly 6 million individuals live with chronic disabilities as a result of a TBI. According to The Brain Trauma Foundation, moderate to severe head injury is associated with increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease later in life.
Centegra recognizes the importance of not only raising awareness about brain injuries but also providing care for those who have suffered these injuries. The Centegra Neuro-Rehabilitation Center in Crystal Lake provides comprehensive outpatient services for people who have suffered brain injuries or neurological impairments. Centegra’s mission is to help patients achieve the highest level of independence at home and in their communities. The neuro-rehabilitation program can be contacted by calling 815-356-2700.
