Men from throughout the McHenry County area took advantage of health screenings and educational opportunities in September at a men’s health event at the Centegra Sage Cancer Center.
Centegra Health System and the Gavers Community Cancer Foundation are committed to raising awareness of the importance of early detection and prevention of multiple cancer types. The two organizations provided two screening events in the fall. The Gavers Community Cancer Foundation provided the funding to assist Centegra Health System in taking early detection of multiple cancer types to the next level by offering some of these free and comprehensive screening events to the community.
The free event provided prostate, skin, oral, head and neck cancer screenings along with wellness exhibits, nutrition advice and video of the daVinci robotic surgery system. Centegra’s mobile health unit, Wellness on the Move, was open for free blood pressure screenings, body mass index and body fat screenings and non-fasting finger stick diabetes screenings.
Also during the event, Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center, Centegra Sage Cancer Center and Centegra Gavers Breast Center provided information on their services.
“This is the first time that I have received all of these free screenings in one day,” said Carl Schnulle, 63. “With this information, now I understand what I have to do to get things in control and be healthier.”
Gholam Keshavarzi, 69, said he was happy to hear about the event.
“It was good to hear about an event just for men,” “Keshavarzi said. “What you don’t know can hurt you. You need to go after the issue and try to face whatever the situation might be. After taking the screenings, I know where I am health wise and I know I am fine. I know where I stand and it relieves the pressure and tension from not knowing.”
Centegra Health System and the Gavers Community Cancer Foundation partner all year to raise awareness of the importance of early cancer detection. The Get Checked! Program provides information about lifestyle changes and guidelines for routine screenings that can make a big difference in one’s life.
The Gavers Cancer Resource Library is also featured in Centegra Sage Cancer Center in McHenry and offers touch-screen computers, a library inventory of books, journals and booklets. Information in the library is available in English and Spanish.
