Speaker: Dr. R. David Halstead, Pediatrician with Centegra Physician Care
What do you know about heart murmurs in children? A heart murmur is a swishing or whistling sound that is heard over the chest and felt to come from the heart or from one of the blood vessels near the heart. It is a sound of turbulence in the flow of blood. This turbulence can be normal or abnormal. Most murmurs are found to be innocent or functional sounds of normal blood flow. However, some murmurs can be associated with significant heart defects. When a definitive answer is needed, a painless, harmless sound wave study of the heart called an echocardiogram can be performed at Centegra Hospital-McHenry and Centegra Hospital-Woodstock.
