Speaker: Dr. Elissa Brebach, Radiologist, Section Chief of Women's Imaging
Centegra Health System and the new Centegra Gavers Breast Center use the latest technologies to detect and treat breast cancer. One of the medical imaging tools we use is magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, of the breast.MRI is a noninvasive test that involves no exposure to radiation. At Centegra, we use breast MRI to supplement mammography and ultrasound. It has been shown to be an effective tool in the detection and staging of breast cancer and other breast abnormalities. Some women who have dense breast tissue or are at a high risk for breast cancer are also candidates for the use of breast MRI as a screening tool to detect early cancers. We also use breast MRIs to monitor patients during their treatment for breast cancer. The images help us evaluate the cancer, plan treatments such as surgery and radiation and monitor the effectiveness of chemotherapy.
