Bike Helmet Safety

Speaker: Dr. Ann Dilla, Family Practice Physician, Centegra Primary Care

I’m Dr. Ann Dilla, a family practitioner with Centegra Primary Care. I talk to my patients about the importance of wearing helmets every time they get on their bicycles.Bike helmets are the most effective way to reduce head injuries and death from a crash. To be sure the helmet fits properly, try the Eyes, Ears and Mouth Test. For Eyes, be sure the rim sits one to two finger widths above the eyebrows. You should look up and see the bottom rim of the helmet. For Ears, the straps of the helmet should form a “V” under the ears when buckled. For Mouth, open your mouth. If you feel the helmet hug your head, the straps are snug enough.Centegra will give free bike helmets and safety fittings to the first 400 children to attend the Centegra Family Health Fest from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 21 at Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center in Huntley. Arrive early to get your helmet!
