Ethics Consultations
Members of the Centegra Ethics Committee are available to help patients, families or caregivers when they are faced with difficult ethical decisions.
Ethics consultations may be requested if a patient or family member would like additional information, dialogue and support in dealing with the following areas:
- Advance directives
- Surrogate decision making
- The refusal of treatment
- Conflicts with caregivers
- Withholding or withdrawing treatment
- Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders
- Other issues perceived as ethical problems
Procedure
An ethics consultation can be initiated by either:
- Placing a call to the Nursing Supervisor (24 hours a day, 7 days a week)
- Centegra Hospital – McHenry
- (815) 759-4299 (7 am – 3 pm)
- (815) 759-4249 (3 pm – 7 am and Holidays & Weekends)
- Centegra Hospital – Woodstock (815) 334-3977
- Asking a caregiver to initiate an ethics consultation on your behalf
You will be asked about the nature of the ethical problem and how you can be contacted.
The best initial approach to an ethical conflict is a discussion that can include patients, family members, chaplains, nurses, physicians and other involved healthcare professionals. These discussions may be organized as a patient care conference.Illinois Department of Education – Advance Directive
