What is an exercise stress echocardiogram?
An exercise stress echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart at rest and immediately following exercise.
Why is an exercise stress echocardiogram done?
An exercise stress echocardiogram will give your doctor information about the size and thickness of your heart. It also shows how well your heart pumps blood at rest and under the stress of supervised exercise.

To make an appointment for a Cardiac Diagnostic Test, call
(815) 759.4050.
When you arrive in the stress testing room you will be asked to remove your shirt and bra (females) and wear a gown with the opening in the front. Your privacy will be respected at all times. After signing a consent form, you will be asked to lie down and you will be attached to a heart monitor. You will then be asked to lie on your left side and the ultrasound technologist will take images of your heart.
When the doctor arrives, the treadmill exercise session will begin. The treadmill will be started at a low speed with a small hill. Every three minutes the speed and hill will increase and your blood pressure will be checked. When your target heart rate (calculated by staff) is reached and/or you are too tired to walk or jog, the treadmill will be stopped and you will immediately return to the table to lie on your left side. The ultrasound technologist will then take more images of your heart while your heart rate is elevated. You will remain on the monitor for about six minutes.
