Why Does it Matter What I  Eat?

One of the only ways to reduce  complications from diabetes is  to change  your diet. This is achieved through an  education process that teaches you how to nourish  your body. Our dedicated registered dietitians are constantly working to create innovative ways to teach you about  healthy eating.

As soon as you are diagnosed with diabetes,  nutrition education begins. We have two registered dietitians available at all times to help you throughout your journey. After diagnosis, they meet with you  for an hour individually to discuss the following:

  • Food history
  • Food types and preferences
  • An individualized meal plan based on  the foods  you like

Nutrition Beyond Treatment

Dietitian  support does not end after you have completed the self-management class.  Their  responsibilities throughout your classes and in the future include:

  • Identifying what causes your eating behavior
  • Helping to  teach you about insulin injections
  • Providing a shopping list based on your food record
  • Consulting with  you about weight loss
  • Helping with behavior management

Innovative Education

Part of diabetes  education includes nutrition. We understand that everyone learns differently, so we  offer something people of all ages will enjoy. Some of the services we provide through the self-management classes are:

  • Cookbooks and sample menus
  • A  free carb-counting class each quarter that includes  a free carb-counting book
  • An on-staff chef who has diabetes demonstrates how to cook healthy meals at home

Common Misconceptions

Many people think  people with diabetes  need a low-carbohydrate diet,  but carbohydrates are needed to give us energy and fuel to get through the day. The trick is choosing the right carbs to eat and enjoy.

The dietitians at Centegra have a moderate approach to dieting.  We focus  on healthy eating  to achieve a balanced  food plan  that includes:

  • Lots of whole grains
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Low-fat dairy
  • Low-fat protein
