Geoffrey L. Smoron, M.D.

Medical Director/ Radiation Oncologist

Dr. Smoron is the Medical Director for Centegra Sage Cancer Center at Centegra Hospital-McHenry and President of Midwest Radiation Oncology Consultants, Ltd., the hospital-based physician practice for Centegra’s Radiation Oncology Department. He also serves as the Cancer Liasion Physician for Centegra’s Cancer Committee.

Dr. Smoron received both his undergraduate degree and his medical degree from Loyola University in Chicago, followed by an internship at Evanston Hospital and residency at Wesley Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University Hospital in Chicago. He is board certified in Therapeutic Radiology and is a Fellow in the American College of Radiology and American College of Radiation Oncology. He served 15 years in the Naval Reserve, including 2 years on active duty as Lieutenant Commander at Great Lakes Naval Hospital, Great Lake, Illinois. He is past president of the Chicago Radiological Society and serves on the Executive Committee of the Illinois Radiological Society and the Governor’s Radiation Technology Advisory Board. Recently, he was honored by the Chicago Radiological Society as the recipient of  The Distinguished Service Award 2007 for his many years of service to radiation oncology as well as his leadership in organized medicine at both the state and national level. He has also been recognized for 25 years of teaching as Assistant Professor of Radiology at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, and in the same year, received the Distinguished Committee Service award from the American College of Radiology.

He has served McHenry County since the 1980s and is a lifelong resident of the Chicagoland area, living in Lake Forest with his wife Joan, in close proximity to three of their six grandchildren.

Terrence J. Bugno, M.D., FACR, DABHM

Dr. Bugno serves as an attending radiation oncologist in Radiation Oncology Services for Centegra Health System. He has served as the Medical Director for Centegra Sage Cancer Center at Centegra Hospital – McHenry and is currently on the Board of Directors for Centegra Health System.

Dr. Bugno, a product of Chicago’s Southwest side, graduated from Benedictine University in Lisle, IL and received his MD training from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He is board certified in radiation oncology and was also in the first group of board-certified Practitioners in Holistic Medicine conferred in late 2000.

Among his many professional honors and activities, he was commissioned to create a commemorative video slide set celebrating the 100th anniversay of Roentgen’s discovery of X-rays and roles for therapy in the first 100 years. A member of Alpha Omega medical honor society, he has been selected as a Chicago area “top doc” by his peers. This past summer at the annual 2009 Gavers Barn Dance, Dr. Bugno was recognized with the annual “Be Not Defeated” award for significant contributions and sacrifices made to the community for those dealing with cancer.

Dr. Bugno resides in McHenry County and and is a consulting physician for East-West Integrated Therapies in Barrington. He is a semi-retired professional musician (trumpet) whose loves include music, studies in all areas of science, metaphysics and holistic healthcare, table tennis, nature and his wife, Christine, and two daughters, Lindsey and Samantha.

Jeffrey P. Shafer, M.D.

Radiation Oncologist

Dr. Shafer serves  a limited schedule as  an attending radiation oncologist in Radiation Oncology Services for Centegra Health System.

Dr. Shafer received his undergraduate and graduate degree in California, attending both University of Southern California and California State University-Fresno. He received his medical degree from University of California-Irvine. He is board certified in Therapeutic Radiology and served seven years as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve 825th and 45th Hospitals. He has had a well-rounded medical career from neutron therapy at Fermilab, 1995-2003, to the Chicago Prostate Center beginning in 1997. His latest honor was being a finalist for the R.I.S.E Award for Medical Excellence in 2004. Dr. Shafer is a resident of McHenry County.

David B. Suh, M.D.

Dr. Suh serves a limited schedule as an attending radiation oncologist in Radiation Oncology Services for Centegra Health System.

Dr. Suh received his education at University of Pittsburgh and his medical degree from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, followed by an internship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is board certified in Therapeutic Radiology and has been involved in the initiation of several radiotherapy programs throughout his career. He is a resident of McHenry County.

Courtney C. Coke, M.D.

Radiation Oncologist

Dr. Coke serves a limited schedule as an attending radiation oncologist in Radiation Oncology Services for Centegra Health System.

Dr. Coke received his graduate degree from University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois and his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, followed by an internship at Montreal General Hospital in Montreal, Quebec. He completed his residency at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec and served as a Fellow in the NeuroOncology and Stereotactic Radiosurgery program in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Additionally, his training includes Brain Laboratory training in Munich, Germany and Gamma Knife training in Stockholm, Sweden. He is board certified in Therapeutic Radiology and has served as a volunteer clinical assistant for Operation Crossroads Africa in Sierra Leone, Africa. Dr. Coke is a resident of the Chicagoland area.
