Adolescents can have dangerous heart problems with no symptoms. Many active teenagers do not show symptoms of heart abnormalities yet may be at risk for cardiac arrest and even death. Many cases of sudden cardiac death in teenagers, especially ages 13-18, can be prevented with a proper heart screening. Centegra Wellness on the Move Mobile Health Unit now offers echocardiogram (ECHO) screenings designed for teenagers. This screening is an ultrasound of the heart and can help detect heart defects and abnormalities, even when no symptoms are present. ECHO heart screening requires:
- Completion of a pre-screening questionnaire
- Parental consent and presence of a parent at the screening
- Comfortable clothing to be worn
ECHO screenings are interpreted by R. David Haldtead, MD, a Centegra Primary Care physician specializing in Pediatric Cardiology, and the results will be promptly provided.
